The dentist for dental hygiene treatment
For many, the act of going to the dentist conjures up the idea that there must be something ‘wrong’ with their teeth in order to be booking a dental appointment. This is perhaps due to how we experienced the dentist during our formative years, or additional factors outside of our control. Of course there is absolutely nothing wrong with thinking about a trip to the dentist for treatment of a problem, because this makes up a large proportion of what we do.
Here at Laffan Dental we recognise that preventive treatment is exceedingly important for our patients, and we are proud to be a dentist in Blackwood which can provide such care. Not only does prevention go a long way to promoting a long lifespan for your natural teeth, but this also contributes to good overall oral health.
What is preventive dentistry?
Maybe you haven’t heard the term preventive dentistry before, but it simply refers to treatments which function to help prevent further problems from occurring, hence the word preventive. Children’s dentistry falls under this umbrella, as most of what the dentist in Blackwood would do for your child is to maintain good oral hygiene and promote a positive experience of the dentist. This may seem like a strange thing to promote, but a positive experience of the dentist in Blackwood in early life can help pave the way towards a lifetime of good dental care. Of course, there are also times when further intervention is needed for children which goes beyond the term preventive.
The dental hygienist
Here, at our dental practice, our dental hygienist is able to help you with several aspects of your dental care. For example, dental hygiene appointments are most commonly carried out by our dental hygienist. These should be attended regularly, bi-annually is a good routine to get into with booking them in. During your appointment with the hygienist you can expect to undergo an examination to begin with, as our dental hygienist would check for any visible problems before proceeding with the appointment. This is a great opportunity for you to mention if you are experiencing any pain which we should take into account throughout your appointment, and our hygienist would be able to advise you about what sort of further appointments may be appropriate to treat your pain.
Following the examination of your mouth and teeth, you can expect for our hygienist to clean your teeth using dental tools and a polish. This is often referred to as scaling and polishing.
Another key aspect of the role of our hygienist is to provide you with education in how to maintain good oral health routines at home. This could take the form of discussing correct brushing practices or, particularly for those with additional dental fixtures, may involve recommending tools such as interdental brushes to get the best clean possible at home. It is important to note that regularly visiting our hygienist, although integral to your oral health, does not remove the need for booking in your treatments with our dentist. These two roles go hand in hand, towards the same goal of helping you to maintain your best possible oral health.
